RENO PHIL VIOLIST

What year did you join the orchestra?
September 2010

How long have you been playing music?
34 years

How did you pick your instrument?
Actually, my mom picked for me… Violin at 4, then viola at 9

When you’re not playing with the Reno Phil, what would we most likely see you doing in your free time?
Usually, me and my wife Hui get super busy and don’t even have time to spend at home. Right now we are getting the chance to play music that we like, go hiking, and cook together.

What genre of music are you most excited to play?
Movie music

What is your favorite piece of all time to play, and why?
Anything by J S Bach; his music is like sounds from the soul.

If you could meet one composer/musician, who would it be and why?
John Williams. Everybody knows why lol

What is your favorite vacation spot?
In the forest, in autumn.

What do you think the audience would find surprising about you?
Being a classical music player, it’s hard to surprise the audience–we aren’t like pop musicians who have costumes and move around the stage; we can only use music to surprise them!

What about performing live music brings you joy?
The “live” element of music is absolutely fun. Music should not be “prepared” to play, but performed with inspiration and spontaneity. Each live performance is unique because everyone has different emotions depending on the day and hour, so each performance varies depending on the different times it’s played. A music recording can’t give a full view. It’s like a photo, because a photo never even shows half of the whole view your eyes can see in a given moment.
