RENO PHIL CELEBRATES AMERICAN COMPOSERS AT UPCOMING CONCERT
Reno, Nev. (February 3, 2022)— This February, the Reno Phil celebrates the diversity of our nation’s rich cultural tapestry with a concert program titled “All Americans: Copland & Price.”

The concert features works written by American composers, including local composer Monica Houghton. Houghton has written a new piece titled, “Respectfully yours,” which will be given its world premiere by the Reno Phil at the concert. It took Houghton about a year to compose the piece, which she describes as a love letter to the Great Basin.
Reno Phil Principal Clarinet and Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the University of Nevada, Reno, Joshua Anderson, will be the featured soloist for Aaron Copland’s Clarinet Concerto. Aaron Copland wrote his Clarinet Concerto for clarinetist and bandleader Benny Goodman (1909-1986), who from the mid 1930s was one of the most popular musicians in the United States. Copland himself is known as “the dean of American composers.”
The program also features the notable work Symphony No. 1 in E Minor, composed by Florence Price. In 1933, Price made history as the first-ever black female composer to have a symphony performed by a major US orchestra. She wrote over 300 works in the span of her lifetime many of which are now being rediscovered. This will be the first time Laura Jackson has performed anything from her repertoire.
“…You think of this African-American woman growing up in the 1920s and 30s in Little Rock, Arkansas, and the fact that she was able to gain the skills to write symphonic works, and then to see her work performed by the Chicago Symphony a number of years later is just truly remarkable.” said Music Director, Laura Jackson.
